When did you last see a full fledged band and a small modern dance theatre company join forces for an evening filled with the energy of live music and the visual and physical enchantment of the dance? Probably never. Plus add the engaging storytelling of actor Gus Edwards. It all points to an exciting and unusual venture for the artists and audience alike.

A Ludwig Dance Theatre, eight dancers, and the 65 member Arizona Wind Symphony, are partners in the April concert series On the Beating Path at the Tempe Performing Arts Center. A seemingly unbalanced pairing in numbers, the Project Dance/Music came about after Artistic Director Ludwig attended one of the concerts of this community band. Impressed by the quality of the work and the possibility of doing something that rarely happens, Ludwig contacted Director Bill Richardson and plans began to develop for an evening concert, not in the typical manner of taking turns performing, but a fusion that thoroughly integrates the dance and the music in one close environment. Adding to the overall impact is guest narrator Gus Edwards, actor, playwright and ASU professor.

As well as joining the full band, the dance company is working with three ensembles from that group: wind, percussion, and brass. Says Ludwig, the impact of such rich and real surround sound is an incredible addition to the process and the product for the dancers.

Both A Ludwig Dance Theatre and Arizona Wind Symphony are scheduled as "users" for the new Tempe Arts Center when it opens in the fall of '06. Until then, the old Tempe Performing Arts Center offers its own set of challenges for the collaboration of the performing groups, most notably the size of the theater, sound properties, and lighting. Both are anxious to be part of the new facility located on the Tempe Town Lake. To learn about the performing companies visit: www.aludwigdance.org and www.arizonawindsymphony.org.

Concerts are scheduled for April 20-22 at 7:30 with a April 23 matinee at 2:00 at the Tempe Performing Arts Center, 132 East 6th Street in Tempe. Tickets are $15 general, $12 senior, $10 student, $6 for age 12 and below. They are available at Jack's Ticket Agency, 480-968-3939 and PayPal reached through www.aludwigdance.org. For information call 480-966-3391 or 602-206-5747, Marketing Director Tim Rooney, also timrooney@aludwigdance.org.
